The biggest challenge most of us face in daily life is a lack of focus.
No matter how much you love and revere your work, there will be times when you keep losing focus repeatedly.
It happens even when we are engaged in an interesting task, so there’s no stopping it, as we are wired to chase short-term gratification in every task.
So, it’s the new normal fr our small attention span. But you can’t let distractions win; they'll wreck your productivity.
I have to learn this the hard way. I tried every productivity tool under the sun, but I kept coming up short as I was as easily distractible as my pup.
But, over the years, I have developed a simple routine of four easy habits that have helped me let go of distractions and shift my focus instantly.
1. Get out of the rut by getting small things done
Sometimes you’ll set up everything right in perfect productivity.
But still fall headfirst when it comes to executing.
You feel prepared, yet you can’t seem to focus on the task.
This underlying resistance is a result of your wandering mind that’s fixated on trivial things.
The only way to move past it is by getting the trivial task out of the way, or else you’ll keep thinking about it.
The dirty dishes sitting in your sink, or the pending bills that you keep reminding yourself of, will stay in your mind till the task is completed.
But we follow the routine so rigidly that we don’t make time for the small tasks and keep popping up in our minds.
So, for unbreakable focus, you need to get these small pesky tasks out of the way once and for all.
Do the dishes. Pay the damned bills. Return the call. Reply to emails.
Get it all out of the way.
2. Indulging in distractions can help boost focus
Distractions are incessant and consistent, so it takes less than a minute to shift your focus completely from your task.
You try your hardest to cut them out completely, but somehow you end up finding your way back to them.
No extreme measures seem to work when it comes to managing distractions.
But there’s only one thing that you can do when everything else fails, give in to your indulgences.
Use procrastination to your advantage when everything seems to fail. Find useful content you can indulge in without frying your brain.
Ditch the reels for long-form content that can help you learn a thing or two about yourself.
I feel the biggest distraction in today’s time is reels. You open the app, and the next thing you know, an hour has passed scrolling.
Limit your options by removing addictive apps from your phone. I don’t have YouTube and Instagram on my phone to avoid scrolling reels.
But complete withdrawal from these distractions is next to impossible, so be wise and slot a few short breaks in your busy schedule to scroll on better content.
Reddit is my poison, but I make it a habit to start a timer before logging in. A 10-minute scroll can help you focus for the next fifty minutes.
3. Better mental health maintenance to boost focus
You are overstimulated by the hectic lifestyle that leaves little to no time for emotional maintenance.
The longer you postpone your mental health dilemma, the tougher it gets to untangle from the web of unexpressed feelings.
It will only end up in an emotional breakdown that will wreck your productivity completely.
And the longer you wait to address your emotions, the more intense the breakdown.
So, take time out daily for better emotional management; a five-minute exercise can help you get better hold over your emotions.
Start your day with a daily journaling routine for better emotional management throughout the day.
Write down your string of thoughts to get your emotions in check to perform better throughout the day.
You can also use a journaling prompt if you feel pressured to write your thoughts out.
4. Art can get you through a burnout in five minutes
It’s hard to sustain intense focus for a long time as we live in a world full of distractions.
But there are simple tools you can use to improve focus, and one way to do so is by tapping into music.
A tune that, without lyrics that can help you tap into flow state easily without spending a dime.
A good symphony or tune can help you get into a flow state easily without a hassle.
It’s a scientifically proven method for optimal productivity. Classical music and alpha beats are some of the best options for intense focus to get things done.
White noise can also help you sustain focus, so invest in a good pair of headphones to block out distractions.
Conclusion
Your productivity is dependent on many factors, but distractions can get in the way.
And we live in a world full of distractions, so it's hard to avoid them completely, but you can get over them by making a good routine.
And make sure to add a few habits that can help you manage your emotions better for optimal productivity.
